A Little Too Fast

PHOTO: Emergency personnel work the scene of a train wreck, May 12, 2015, near Philadelphia.A Train clocked at 106 miles per hour at 9:21 pm on May 12, 2015 derailed while going around a corner. The speed limit on the straightaway previous to that bend was said to be 70 miles per hour, and the corner was 50. The engineer claims to not recall the incident. He remembers a place similar to right before the bend, but the next thing he new, he was being tossed around. He has a concussion, and 14 staples in his head. The train was brand new, about a year old, and the tracks were checked just the day before. Over 200 were injured, and 10 in critical condition. 5 died on the scene, and two later in the hospital. Lets hope things are prevented in the future, as train cars should not roll over like toys.

Tiger Attendance

Over the past couple of years, the SLOHS attendance has become much more rigid. The new code has become way more strict, obviously leading to less teens skipping school.

Image result for attendanceA lot of people disagree with this new policy that states that the parent or guardian must state before lunchtime that the student will not be attending at all or for the rest of that day. The reason for this disagreement is that for one unexcused absence, you are forced to go to Saturday School. Previously, three unexcused absences result in Saturday School. Also, students are arguing that their parents might not be able to contact the school. We hope this conflict will be resolved, as many people are unhappy.

The Newest Spy Movie- "Kingsman: The Secret Service"

Kingsman The Secret Service poster.jpgThat's Right! Another spy movie hits the box office. "Kingsman: Secret Service" is another spy movie like James Bond that has all the cool weapons and gadgets to  impress the audience. With a budget of $81 million and a predicted $154.3 million in the ticket booth, "Kingsman" is a hit receiving positive ratings. The movie was first released in the United Kingdom, then later released in America around half a month later. My personal opinion would be giving this show a five star rating, then again, I am not a critic. Though I will plan on purchasing this film when it is released in June 2015. Fans, including me, are delighted to hear that the producers, Millar and Vaughn, are willing to make a sequel IF the movie is successful in the theater.

LOVR Traffic Release Project

To possibly reduce after-school traffic on Los Osos Valley road, CAL trans has a plan that will cost $24 million to make two new bridges over the 101 highway and widen the on ramp to the 101 on the Los Osos Valley Road bridge.

Construction on this whopper of a project is ongoing right now, and isn't expected to be done until summer 2016. It will last for 18 months. Surprisingly, this idea/plan was actually started in 2004, and was finally approved in 2011. Funding was approved in June 2014 and construction started in fall 2014.

The Rhinosaurous Rex is Back!

Almost entirely wiped out in 1982, the rhinos are back in Uganda! Now, with the help of non-profit Zhiwa Rhino Sanctuary, rhinos are reproducing and surviving.

At least they should be able to survive. These beasts are protected by a two- meter charged fence that surrounds the whole sanctuary. On top of it all, they are sheltered by armed guards, 24/7. The Rhinos are followed and observed by experts, even at night.

The Sleep BuzzzzZZZzzzZZzzz

Turns out, SLOHS students seem to not be getting enough sleep! Due mostly to extracurricular activities, sometimes employment, and their daily homework, teen learners are not getting enough sleep.

Scholars want to get good grades, therefore they do most anything-in this case staying up late-to keep up their grades. Along with this, school starts at 7:50 or so Tuesday through Friday, leaving students with only several hours of sleep, sometimes barely any at all.

These dystopian novels such as "The Hunger Games" and "Divergent", are making a big boom in the teen reading business.

Topsy-turvy Turbulence

By Christian C.

On January 3rd, 2015, a biplane flipped over while landing on the San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport runway.  The pilot and passenger came out without injury, although the plane.... well never mind it.

"The biplane apparently flipped over when the front two landing gears locked into place, causing the plane to somersault, Piper said." stated Janet Lavelle and Elaine Anderson, reporters from The Tribune. Due to this faulty landing gear, around three airports had to delay their departures to San Luis Obispo. Current flights were delayed for hours while the plane was flipped over by a crane, the fuel cleaned up, and the aircraft removed from the runway.

Scampering for Success!

Tuesday, January 5th, every 8th grader in the school was given the instructions for...the Mousetrap Car contest!

Every student is expected to construct an operating mousetrap car, although there are certain specifications and rules. This is all due with memorized vocabulary and laws of physics on February 11th. This leaves some students scrambling for a design, shrugging this off because they are using their sibling's, or confident of  winning considering they think of they're blueprints as award winning.

Students will have to plan their car, buy the supplies they need, then construct their vehicle that meets the requirements. As stated previously, this will be simple for some, and more of a challenge for others.

We will soon see what the 8th grade creative minds have to offer!
